What are some ways to Lower My Cholesterol?

I’m not completely positive that I have high levels of cholesterol, but I have a high suspicion that I do. While I get to the doctor, what are some things I can do to keep my cholesterol at normal levels?

My cardiologist recommends fish oil. They come in odorless. I take 2 a day (1,000mgs). Also, exercise of course. Stay away from any foods with trans fats and/or hydrogenated oils. Foor cooking use olive oil instead of vegtable oil. Olive oil is good for your heart. Below is an IVillage site with cholesterol info

A comprehensive dose-response study of the effects of pistachios on cardiovascular disease risk factors: A translational research approach integrating clinical nutrition and molecular biology.

$49.99

Nut consumption reduces risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Few studies have evaluated the effects of pistachios on CVD risk factors and they have not evaluated dose-response relationships or lipid-lowering mechanisms. Nutrition studies with a translational research approach integrate clinical nutrition and molecular biology, allowing for the investigation of clinical responses and underlying cellular mechanisms. The present study utilized a translational research approach to comprehensively evaluate the effects of pistachios on CVD. We employed a randomized crossover controlled-feeding study to evaluate the effects of two doses of pistachios, added to a lower-fat diet, on lipids and lipoproteins, apolipoprotein-defined lipoprotein subclasses, and plasma fatty acids. To investigate mechanisms of action, we measured serum cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), indices of plasma stearoyl-CoA desaturase activity (SCD), and gene expression in isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Total cholesterol (TC), LDL-C, non-HDL-C, apoB, and apoB/apoA-I decreased after both pistachio diets; and triacylglycerol and plasma SCD activity decreased after the 3.0 ounce pistachio diet (P < 0.05). Pistachios elicited a dose-dependent lowering of TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, and non-HDL-C/HDL-C (P < 0.01). We evaluated the effects of pistachios on expression of genes related to inflammation and lipid metabolism (TNFalpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, ICAM, VCAM, CETP, and LCAT) in PBMCs. Furthermore, we investigated the relationship between diet-induced change in CETP expression and change in serum CETP and plasma lipids/lipoproteins. The pistachio-rich diets significantly decreased IL-1beta expression compared to baseline (P < 0.05). Change in CETP expression in PBMCs predicted change in LDL-C, NONHDL-C, TC/HDL-C, and NONHDL-C/HDL-C in individuals who were diet-responsive with regards to serum CETP. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that pistachios elicit beneficial

This study analyzes the market for functionally enhanced milk products. The models in each paper are tested using the AC Nielsen retail milk market demand data. The continuous product attributes that characterize each milk type are derived from USDA Nutritional Nutrient Database.;The first paper investigates the factors affecting the demand for soymilk products in the dairy market based on a two-stage hedonic model. In the first stage, the relationship between the prices of dairy products and the attributes of these products are exploited to derive the marginal implicit attribute prices. In the second stage, these marginal prices are used along with the information on households’ demographic background to explain the demand for product attributes. Our results indicate that although the soymilk attribute has a negative value itself, since soymilk is lactose/cholesterol free (LFCF) and mostly organic, it has a higher price premium than other milk types. Moreover, as the negative value of soymilk attribute diminishes, consumers purchase more soymilk. Among the demographic variables, presence of children, education level and age of the household have significantly positive impact on soymilk demand.;In the second paper, we introduced the concept of Hedonic Metric (HM) approach as an approximation method to estimate the price elasticities in classical traditional models. In these models, the number of estimated parameters increases exponentially with the number of variables included in the model. One method suggested by Pinske, Slade, and Brett (2002) suggests using spatial distances as a neoclassical approach to estimate the elasticities. Rojas and Peterson (2008) applied the Distance Metric (DM) method to the beer market using different combinations of distances. Although their method is insightful, the choice of distances is ambiguous and depends on prior judgments about data and trial/error methodology. Hedonic Metric (HM) method applied in this paper is practical

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Abetalipoproteinemia, or Bassen-Kornzweig syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that interferes with the normal absorption of fat and fat-soluble vitamins from food. It is not to be confused with familial dysbetalipoproteinemia. Abetalipoproteinemia affects the absorption of dietary fats, cholesterol, and certain vitamins. People affected by this disorder are not able to make certain lipoproteins, which are molecules that consist of proteins combined with cholesterol and particular fats called triglycerides. This leads to a multiple vitamin deficiency, affecting the fat-soluble vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K. However, many of the observed effects are due to vitamin E deficiency in particular.

Alteration of EGFR family members through targeting lipid raft signaling.

Alteration of EGFR family members through targeting lipid raft signaling.

$49.99

Epidermal Growth Factor Receptors (EGFR) comprise a family of proteins that are overexpressed in more than 30% of breast cancers. These transmembrane receptors localize to specialized plasma membrane domain called lipid rafts, highly ordered domains enriched in cholesterol and glycophosphingolipids. In contrast to most lipid raft associated receptors, whose signaling is stimulated by the aggregation of lipid rafts to form signaling platforms, EGFR signaling is associated with movement of EGFR out of the lipid raft. Therefore, EGFR signaling can be potentially modulated by targeting lipid rafts, through alteration of structure or fluidity. The purpose of the present study is to test the hypothesis that conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a dietary fatty acid which inhibits breast cancer, mediates some of its effects through alteration of raft dynamics. The effects of CLA on breast cancer cell lipid raft structure were examined by staining with fluorescent cholera toxin B subunit, which binds specifically to lipid rafts. The results do not indicate a consistent increase or decrease of lipid raft size or raft count per cell on CLA and EGF treatment in replicate experiments. They also do not consistently change the expression of EGFR and pEGFR. Although colocalization studies were carried out, confocal microscopy will indicate stronger results for colocalization. Further studies involving western blots on cell lysates and experiments for change in downstream signaling will be carried out to effectively study the effect of CLA on breast cancer cell lines.

Alternatives@is an unique short story and first-hand anecdotes of chiropractic medicine. Dr. Tom Clayton, a highly respected chiropractic physician in the small community of Deerfield, Illinois, unexpectedly finds himself a defendant in a law suit having been accused of inducing a stroke and subsequent death of Nancy Holt by adjusting cervical vertebrae in her neck.. After enduring a tense jury trial Tom devotes his life and practice to educating people as to the many advantages of alternative approaches to the treatment of disease as opposed to the use of toxic drugs and invasive surgery. Not only does he educate patients in his office but soon finds himself conducting open seminars in a local school auditorium. He takes dead aim at the pharmaceutical industry exposing the cholesterol myth, discussing several successful approaches to cancer treatment without the devastating effects of chemotherapy, surgery or radiation and introduces proven methods of halting the progression of Alzheimer=s Disease. Other topics include the multitude of toxins we inhale, inject, ingest and absorb on a daily basis, the evils of sugar and an unique approach to osteoporosis. The book is factual, absorbing and thought provoking for everyone interested in their health.

Application of the Mediterranean-style diet principles to the American diet: Does a diet consistent with the Mediterranean-style diet protect against the development of risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Framingham Offspring Cohort?

$49.99

The objective of the project was to examine the relationship between a diet consistent with Mediterranean-style dietary pattern and the metabolic risk factors of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The objective of this project was accomplished using data from the Framingham Heart Study Offspring Cohort.;A Mediterranean-Style Dietary Pattern Score (MSDPS) was created to assess the conformity of an individual’s diet to a traditional Mediterranean-style diet. This continuously-scaled score (range 0–100), was based on adherence to recommended intakes levels from the Mediterranean diet pyramid and took into account over-consumption of foods and consumption of foods that are not on the Mediterranean pyramid. In 3030 participants, the MSDPS demonstrated content validity against nutrients known to be associated with the Mediterranean-style dietary pattern, including expected positive associations with dietary fiber, n-3 fatty acids, antioxidant vitamins, calcium, magnesium and potassium, and inverse associations with added sugar, glycemic index, saturated fat, trans-fat and n-6:n-3 fatty acid ratio.;The longitudinal association over 7 years (mean follow-up = 7 yr) between MSDPS and insulin resistant traits (HOMA-IR, fasting glucose, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol, blood pressure) and incidence of metabolic syndrome was examined in 2,388 participants without DM and 1,820 participants free of DM and metabolic syndrome at baseline, respectively. The MSDPS was inversely associated with HOMA-IR (P-trend=0.02), waist circumference (P-trend <0.001) and plasma triglyceride (P-trend<0.001); and was positively associated with HDL-cholesterol (P-trend=0.05). A higher MSDPS was also associated with an 8% lower incidence of metabolic syndrome (P-trend=0.03).;In participants without DM or clinically evident CVD, the cross-sectional association was examined between the MSDPS and endothelial function, as measured by brachial artery

Association Of Hypertension Diagnosis And Smoking Cessation

Association Of Hypertension Diagnosis And Smoking Cessation

$51.56

Hypertension and smoking are two major issues threatening the nation’s health. Previous studies examining their relationship have resulted in conflicting reports that leaves readers with the question: Does hypertension diagnosis induce one to quit smoking or does smoking cessation lead to behaviors that increase the risk of hypertension diagnosis? The aim of this work is to closely examine this relationship. Data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) were used in this investigation. Physical examination measurements of blood pressure and self-reported diagnosis and smoking behavior were used to define hypertension and smoking status. The risk of prior hypertension diagnosis associated with smoking cessation was estimated from a multivariate logistic regression model, adjusting for gender, age, ethnicity, BMI, physical activity, HDL cholesterol, and alcohol use. After adjusting for these confounders, are ex-smokers significantly more likely to have a prior hypertension diagnosis? Researchers in the fields of Public Health and Biostatistics will find the results astounding.

 Atherosclerosis, Hypertension and Diabetes

Atherosclerosis, Hypertension and Diabetes

$178.25

This volume is devoted to atherosclerosis, hypertension, and diabetes, three of the most important disease conditions in the world today. Nutritional intervention, cholesterol lowering agents, lipids themselves, particularly oxidized LDL, protein modification by ADP-ribose, bone marrow study, endothelial cell dysfunction, angiotensin, and the role of infection and inflammation are all discussed in the context of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The hypertension section focuses on factors that may be responsible for high blood pressure, such as genetic predisposition, vascular hyperplasia and remodeling, insulin resistance, neurological aspects such as hypothalamic peptides. Also discussed are the possible contributions of the cellular function of the endothelium, nutrition, kidney dysfunction, leptin, and the brain. Novel routes of drug delivery for treatment of hypertension is also a focus. As for diabetes, the risk factors and mechanisms responsible for diabetic vascular and cardiac dysfunction are discussed. Lipid profile changes and fibrinolysis in diabetic patients is detailed, along with adipogenesis, diabetic cardiomyopathy, energy metabolism in the diabetic heart, vanadate as an alternative to insulin, insulin resistance mechanisms, and neurotransmitters as targets for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. These manuscripts were invited from scientists who presented state of the art lectures at the XVII World Congress of the International Society for Heart Research held in Winnipeg in July 2001.

Biopsychosocial outcomes of a resilience and diabetes self-management education intervention in African American adults with type 2 diabetes.

$49.99

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) currently affects more than three million African American adults with double the number expected by 2025. The most effective and safest treatment for T2DM is lifestyle change therapy, including healthful eating, monitoring of blood glucose, and physical activity. However, current lifestyle change interventions are limited in their scope to alter the behaviors of individuals to more healthful ones. These limitations may be attributed, in part, to a lack of attention given to enhancing an individual’s psychosocial process variables, such as resilience, coping skills, self-leadership, and empowerment. Incorporating resilience education into lifestyle change therapies is a novel approach that addresses the behavior modification limitations of current interventions by aiming to enhance psychosocial process variables. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to conduct a six-month pilot study to determine the feasibility of our resilience and diabetes self-management intervention, The Diabetes Coaching Program: Transforming Lives Through Resilience Education, in a convenience sample of African American adults (n=16) with T2DM. The intervention included four weekly resilience and diabetes education classes and eight bi-weekly support group sessions. Survey data and blood samples were collected at baseline and at six months. Twelve participants completed the study (75% retention). Results indicated that higher perceived stress scores were associated with less resilience, fewer adaptive coping skills, lower self-leadership, lower diabetes empowerment and greater depressive symptoms. However, diabetes empowerment was the only psychosocial process variable to be significantly enhanced by the intervention at six months. Weight, BMI, HbA1c, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, and IGF-1 levels were significantly decreased at six months, whereas, lymphocyte proliferation and physical activity were significantly increased. These data

Can quantitative family history scores from the Utah Health Family Tree administered to high school students identify parents at risk of developing coronary heart disease 17 years later?

$49.99

The Utah Health Family Tree is an effective, low-cost survey for determining elevated family history scores that can identify whole families at risk for developing coronary heart disease (CHD). In the present study, I sought to determine whether elevated family history scores could identify individuals at risk for developing CHD.;A prospective cohort study design was used. A total of 28,069 Utah high school students and their parents completed Utah Health Family Tree surveys between 1983 and 1987, which were used to calculate the family history scores for each student’s mother and father. In brief, the parental family history scores were classified into low, high, and very high risk groups. When the Utah Health Family Tree was completed, individual parents with no evidence of CHD were selected from each family history score group to participate in the study.;After an average of 17 years of follow-up, 381 participants completed a telephone-based, CHD, health-related survey and contributed 5,646 person years of observation. Sixty-three incidents of CHD events were recorded, including 26 coronary artery bypass grafts, 17 nonfatal myocardial infarctions, 12 percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasties plus stents, and 8 fatal myocardial infarctions.;A significant trend was seen towards increasing CHD risk (chi2 = 6.55, p = 0.010), with an unadjusted relative risk of 1.00 in the low family history score group (n = 129), 1.66 in the high family history score group (n = 128), and 2.88 in the very high family history score group (n = 124). After adjusting for age, gender, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, alcohol consumption, regular exercise, body weight, family living environment, and education level, the very high family history score group was approximately 2.6 (95% confidence interval from 1.2 to 5.6) times as likely as the low family risk group to develop CHD.;It was concluded that a very high family history score (≥ 3.7) is

Cardiometabolic effects of a carbohydrate restricted diet and increased physical activity in men and women taking statins.

Cardiometabolic effects of a carbohydrate restricted diet and increased physical activity in men and women taking statins.

$49.99

The effect of carbohydrate restriction and increased physical activity on statin treatment has not been examined. The objective of this study was to assess changes in LDL particle size, metabolic syndrome, and emerging cardiometabolic risk factors after a 6-week intervention. Twenty one men and postmenopausal women (mean+/-SD; age: 59.2+/-9.5 y, body weight: 89.2+/-16.8 kg, % body fat: 38.5+/-6.2%, body mass index: 29.52+/-3.03 kg/m 2) who had successfully lowered LDL-C with a statin (<130 mg/dl) were matched on sex, age, lipids, and type of statin and randomized to a very low carbohydrate ketogenic diet (LCD) or a low carbohydrate diet with increased physical activity (LCD+PA). Subjects received weekly dietary counseling from a registered dietitian and they were instructed to maintain body weight. Fasting blood and physiological measurements were taken at baseline, week 3, and week 6. LDL size was measured with non-gradient polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and vertical auto profile ultracentrifugation. Food records (mean+/-SD; baseline: 2159+/-415 kcals, 45/36/20 %carb/fat/pro; intervention: 1739+/-481 kcals, 11/58/26 %carb/fat/pro), urine acetoacetic acid, and serum total ketones demonstrated dietary compliance. LCD+PA incrementally increased average daily steps using a pedometer, reaching 4,792 steps greater than baseline at week 6. LDL particle size (p≤0.05) and reactive hyperemia peak forearm blood flow significantly increased (p≤0.01) and TAG (-36%), insulin (-25%), systolic (-5%) and diastolic (-6%) blood pressure, body weight (-3%), and waist circumference (-4%) decreased. Change in body weight was not significantly correlated with changes in blood markers. There were no significant differences observed for total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, Lp(a), glucose, or flow-mediated dilation, nor were group differences found. These findings indicate that individuals on statin medication showing signs of metabolic syndrome respond favorably to a low

 Caution: Snake Oil

Caution: Snake Oil

$24.95

The headlines keep coming. Every day, we meet new health-related stories about prescription and over-the-counter drugs, medical devices and procedures, the lifestyle we should adopt, foods we should favor, and dietary supplements that would surely add years to our lives. Rightly, we dismiss much of this as pure snake oil. Mayonnaise prevents Alzheimer’s? Chelation therapy blasts away arterial plaque? Food coloring lowers bad cholesterol? Cinnamon clobbers diabetes? Grapefruit erases breast cancer? Watermelon slashes prostate cancer? Come on! But what about more serious-sounding claims? True enough, reports about ACE inhibitors and beta blockers, Advil and Motrin, 64-slice CT scans and PSA tests, drug-coated stents and the DASH diet appear to be far removed from snake oil, but false claims about any of these, this book asserts, are snake oil no less than absurd and fantastic claims about mayonnaise and Alzheimer’s. Consider how glowing press releases of one time, even by renowned medical journals or the FDA, are often followed by conflicting stories at a later time, which makes us ask: Will fancy cholesterol drugs save us from heart attacks or will they destroy our liver? Is the once-a-day baby aspirin the “cure of the century” or a stroke-causing hoax? Will Avandia fight our diabetes or give us a heart attack? “CAUTION: SNAKE OIL!” offers a remedy: If we care to separate bogus claims from the real thing, we must adopt the special way of statistical thinking that is routinely employed by the best of those who undertake the scientific studies that alone can generate medical knowledge we can trust.

Cholesterol Test – a Medical Dictionary, Bibliography, and Annotated Research Guide to Internet References

In March 2001, the National Institutes of Health issued the following warning: “The number of Web sites offering health-related resources grows every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading.” Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with cholesterol test is indexed in search engines, such as www.google.com or others, a non-systematic approach to Internet research can be not only time consuming, but also incomplete. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so.

Cholesterol and Beyond: The Research on Diet and Coronary Heart Disease 1900-2000

$39.95

“Only once in a great while does a book come along that really does the job in addressing a major medical issue. When this happens, all can be joyful… Readers will find ALL their favorite dietary puzzlements dealt with… With consummate scholarship, clarity and brevity, Truswell sifts out the chaff and identifies the critical questions, the responsible investigators, and the key studies.”So says Emeritus Professor Henry Blackburn from the University of Minnesota in the foreword to this remarkable concise book on the history of research on diet and heart disease. This was a theme of scientific, medical and public interest in the 20th Century, a century marked by the rise and fall of coronary heart disease as the major cause of death in the first world, followed by the rise of this cause of death in the developing world. There is obviously much to learn, and this book is an excellent starting point, tracing dietary factors and their role in heart disease one by one: fats, sugar, salt, alcohol, coffee, trans-fats, etc. Without an understanding of the role of diet and the changes that have been seen in the North American and NW European diet, the story of the decline in the heart disease death rate may have been very different.
